Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Well I wish I could do it.
Even pulled a damaged one off the Citreon to see how it went together. Then employed desperate measures, (Haynes), which says prise the whole unit out, then separate lense from body, (the later bit IS easy).

Score so far: Lions 4, Christians 0
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Sorry for the delay on this answer, but I've just solved this problem on my own 02 reg 406 estate. If you open the tailgate, look under the handle, you'll see the 2 light units. To remove the caps and get to the bulbs just place the tip of a tiny ( watchmakers ) screwdriver in one of the 2 holes in the side of the cover and flex ( as shown in the pic ). This will enable the cover to come off.
I had to find out the hard way, by taking the whole unit out from behind, and playing around with it on the bench.
