engine temp gauge not working

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

engine temp gauge not working

Post by cahya »

Hi all,
My engine temp gauge wasn't working, it just move little bit from initial position in whatever condition. checked to garage, doing calibration with PPS, gauge ok. But still when engine running, temp gauge didn't work. And recently the gauge move erratically.

Anybody know what's wrong?

is the wire to the sensor in the thermostat connected fully.

already check with PPS and it show normal temp (around 90 deg C), means the cable plug in correctly...

could be a bsi problem
although did the pps do the manual test to check the actuation of the gague ie make it move up and down for you?
If it failed that test perhaps its the insturment cluster as a part being faulty, if it passed the test then it can be things like the bsi or loose wires. Check the connection of the thermostat, make sure its tight.
Then another place to check when gagues go eratic is the passenger footwell (your cars right hand drive?) beneath the carpet in multiplexed cars is a multipug with a lot of wires, make sure its not soaked in water, or the contacts havent become corroded. Sometimes when its at fault one gague misbehaves, then the others soon do the same after a bit of time.

What exactly is PPS and can you tell us the year of manufacture?

I see you're posting from Indonesia...

Yes I already check with PPS and actuation test pass (the gauge is move up and down). So it's not problem on the cluster right?

I should go the next step checking tho connector on the BSI, shouldn't I?

Btw, PPS is Peugeot Planetary System.

You appear to have proven that the engine ecu knows the correct water temperature, therefore the sensor & wiring are OK. Also, if the gauge moves through the full scale when you perform an actuator test, the instrument panel assembly is OK too.
I think this only leaves a possible communication problem in the data link to the clocks.

I would inspect the wiring to the instruments / reseat all connectors, try a BSI reset and finally try disconnecting the battery for a few hours, (paying attention to the procedure noted here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=13431&p=122217&hil ... ry#p122217).
