cable disconnected under the bonnet
hi this is my first post here
i picked up my new 406 last night
when i went out this morning to have a nose around i noticed a thick red wire down by the battery in between the battery and the headlight
i can see where it is supposed to connect to
but i don't want to connect it just in case it is not supposed to be connected
does anyone know what it is for and if it needs connecting
thanks

Re: cable disconnected under the bonnet
That's weird, a picture would help a lot here if you can. If everything functions well without this wire then leave it alone? do you think it is possible that the car was once used by the emergency services? they would frig-up some kind of headlight flashing gizmo - just a thought

I have the same connector right there, however the wires going in & out of it are black, have no numbers on them and disappear into the wiring loom. It is connected.

Re: cable disconnected under the bonnet
thanks for the responses guys i pluged the cable back in yesterday and turned on the ignition and the rad fan came on
so i can assume that the cable is for the this i also assume that the relay as gone down which is why it was dissconected
aslo i assume that this is what is causing one of the fualt code present (cooling function malfuntion )
does anyone know where the relay is for rad fan
also the other code present says throttle position sensor 2 malfuntion anyone know where the second throttle switch on a 02 2.0 hdi i can see the one where the throttle cable is connected to but not the second one
thanks

Re: cable disconnected under the bonnet
I thought maybe it was something to do with the fans but when I looked up the cable layout it showed the cables coming in from the other side
I think we're going to need your build code:
See the grey square at the bottom of my data sticker here:

The top number is the build code (& which factory it was made in). Mine says 0989189, the 09891 is the build code.
Seems easier than posting pics of indicator stalks

Tue 12 Mar 2002 - Argh! It's full MUX
I *think* (we still didn't figure this one out) the diagrams are wrong, the parts diagram shows the wire heading off towards the battery (hence that connector). The fan is run from the engine ecu and I'm fairly certain the control unit is part of the fan.

Re: cable disconnected under the bonnet
If it's any help:

BM34 - engine fuse panel
1320 - engine ecu
1513 - "cooling fan electronic mixer"

I suspect the control unit but I'm not really sure how to be certain

Re: cable disconnected under the bonnet
hi
thanks for all the info
i have just been out to have quick look i have found the relay it is the grey one next to the plug in the pic
i pluged in the wire turned on the ignition the fan srats up and cuts out after about 30 seconds
so i started the car the fan started up but does not cut out
i have opened the relay and it seems ok as it does click off after 30 seconds with just the ignition on so i dont think it's the relay (i will change it just to see )
my next geuss is the temp switch on the engine but if it is controled by the ecu there won't be a fan switch just a switch for the tempperture gauge
i am correct in thinking this

Re: cable disconnected under the bonnet
It'll still have a temperature switch for the engine ecu. The fan is also controlled by the air con (via the engine ecu again).
I see that relay now but I can't find it on the diagrams (although every time I try to look at the installation diagrams for anything all I get is the one showing the wires coming in from the right, which is bollocks)
I don't think mine has a relay there, just the pressure switch. I'd have a look but I have a trapped nerve in my back and I can't even get in the thing to drive it out the garage
One thing though, if it's only running for 30 seconds with the ignition on it's unlikely to be the fan control unit itself.

Re: cable disconnected under the bonnet
I've had a little bit of a dabble with this previously - on fully mux cars, the radiator fan is controlled by the engine ecu, which will operate the fan to regulate both coolant temperature and refrigerant pressure as far as I can determine. It will also inhibit the aircon, if it's struggling to keep the engine cool.....
The aircon ecu operates the a/c compressor clutch, (unless inhibited as above), to regulate the evaporator temperature to +1 degree, +/- 1
The climate control, regulates the interior fan speed and air distribution / mixing to maintain the cabin temperature.
I don't know where the radiator fan control module is - as Steve says the diagram definitely suggests it's integral with the motor. (If it is, there must be more cables to it than just the main power & earth).
