ABS Fault

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

ABS Fault

Post by turflayer »

Hello!

My previously battered and bruised 406 is still going strong(ish) after it was written off but while the body work is all fixed electrical gremlins are creeping in.

Apart from an 'engine coolant temperature to high' fault which pops up now and again (has done for years but which is getting more frequent) -which i just ignore im getting an ABS FAULT come on as well.

It started last month when i was taking a series of roundabouts at a brisk pace and the abs fault came on. after stopping, switching the car off, leaving it a minute and restarting the fault light on the dash went off not longer after i resumed driving again. However it comes back on when i sometimes do a high speed maneuver (sharpish turns ect), once again it goes off again next time i restart the car.

I know that when the abs light has been off since this has been happening the abs has worked (not sure about when its been on).

I know this fault can be caused by various things (http://www.peugeotcentral.co.uk/ftopic-5312.html) but i would be grateful if anyone could narrow it down to how my fault is occurring, and how i can fix the problem.

Many thanks

Rich

Hi,

Best start wouid be checking the Relucter Rings, ithink theres around 16teeth, check for cracks/breaks,
if there all solid, then you wouid be best having it plugged in, (Code-Read) to work out which side is failing, to desipher if its a sensor failed/failing or bad conection at one of the connectors or chaffed wire,

You couid also try checking the end of the sensors, sometimes ive noticed they can pick up bits of rust/chaff as the sensors are running on a Magnetic pick up.

sorry not much help,

Am having the same issue with mine (left hand turns only), would be nice to know which wheel is causing the issue but if I plug in PP2000 after the dash light has turned itself off there are no stored codes for the ABS :( I'm gonna have to start driving everywhere with the laptop to catch it when it next turns itself on, then at least I will know which corner to look at.

You'd think the ABS would at least log an intermittent fault :?

Strange.

thanks to the replys.

I haven't got a fault code reader, but as my car is a 2002 HDI90 im guessing its going to cost me well over £100 of ebay, which might be a worthwhile investment as my car is getting older. I might live with the fault for a bit as it would be good to narrow down the problem to single wheel.

As its happening when the car turns i would have thought it might be one of the front wheels.... but that would make too much sense.

Well i think ive found the problem (though i haven't fixed it yet) and it turns out to be mechanical...

My front passenger abs ring was broken into two pieces, had slid of its mount into the back of disc and all bent.
I've pulled it off for now, hopefully once i buy the new part of ebay (the dealers dont sell it separate) I'm going to have a go replacing it using some of the guides on here... looks simple enough!... not that i know anything about cars!

both of my front abs rings had splits in, pulling up in traffic was very worrying as the abs would randomly kick in not really slowing the car down  just cleaned the ring & the cv joint and spot welded then into place..... the abs system is quite crude on these cars thank god, so a bit of welding splatter doesnt effect the operation
To rebuild the impossible is possible by making it become a passion..... Oct 2001 406 2.2HDi 16v Executive..... A work in progress :D

Finally manged to hook up PP2000 to mine with the ABS lamp lit.... No fault codes.... Grrrrr

Now the wear indicator light does come on in wet weather as the sheath is striped off one of the wires to the pads... any chance that is triggering the fault as it thinks the pads are shot?

You couid by -pass the wear sensors on the pads to test see if thats the fault,

all you need is a peice of electrical cable make it in to a U shape if you know what imean ?
