Stereo death!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Stereo death!

Post by mjb »

There I am cruising down the M6 on my way home from work doing a nice steady 20mph or so *grumble* when the (aftermarket) stereo dies. "WTF?" I think to myself... I notice the buttons are all dimly flashing rapidly with a very quiet accompanying clicking. Pull off the motorway, take the key out and the thing's still doing it! Start her up and I notice the fuel gauge is reporting empty - a lie; I had half a tank 30 seconds ago...

So I carry on going home. The fuel gauge springs back to life which makes me happy but the lack of music... ARGH!

Anyhow I get here, pull the stereo out before it flattens my battery and it springs back into life. OK, dodgy connection. I pull the cable out, put it back and it's dead. Nip into the house and try the peugeot stereo. Dead. Multimeter (yes I walk around with a multimeter ok!) confirms it; the plug is dead. Check the fuses the best I can (not easy when ppl are trying to drive doen the road and I'm there with the door open kneeling on my mat and blocking the street! Anyhow, the fuses appear to be ok.

I notice there's a few loose wires around and a loose bare earth cable so I decide to dismantel everything and have a look. Well turns out there was a phone kit fitted. Still fitted. Great big sodding nokia-branded box next to a huge great speaker! Cables sprawled everywhere and a couple of loose ends. D'oh! So I've pulled a few miles of cable out from the centre console and feel good about it.

Reckon something's just shorted (hopfully not my precious mp3 stereo!) but as I say the fuses look ok. Can someone quickly dig up for me which fuse it is specifically for the stereo[/i] so I can make sure as I can't seem to find my books at the moment.

Out of interest I found quite a few unused connectors in my travels. Can anyone identify these:
1. Brown+orange 2-pin connector clipped up to the left of the multi-function display
2. Light bulb lying around underneath where the ashtray fits
3. inch-long connector with about 8 wires under the gearstick gaiter
4. square connector with about 4 wires under the gearstick gaiter

If it weren't bloody pissing down I would have had a look at my unheated heated seats tonight. Bah!

Nah those connectors are attached to the buttons... wish I had some pin-outs for the million and one connectors under the seats so I can see what's going on with 'em. Heck even knowing which connector's which would do, or which is supposed to carry the power for the heater... Christ I wish I'd sorted all this out in the summer!

I did however discover the brown+orange one behind the multi-function display is a +12v when the ignition's on (very handy - I'm thinking my GPS/iPaq power adaptor is going to get shoved behind there soon!), and the light bulb under the ashtray is supposed to fit into the ashtray holder

no. 3 is the heated seat switches, check for continuity between these and the 2 pin plugs not connected under your seats

and

no.4 is for the AL4 automatic transmission, which obviously means your car is manual

No, I said the heated seat connectors are attached to the heated seat buttons. They're roughly 3/4in square one green one brown connector iirc. This one was I think a white connector, under 1/4" wide by 1" long with all the pins in one row

no.4 is for the AL4 automatic transmission, which obviously means your car is manual
ahhh

Yeah mate I eventually worked that one out... Nice red glow seeping round the edge of the tray when the lid's shut now :D Ok so I don't actually use the ashtray for anything, only the lid for holding my wallet/fags in place when I'm going to accelerate hard... but hey! It glows! :D
