heater fans

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Mike,

I have the exact same fault on mine, it will be a loose/coroded connector running off the fan.
As yet I haven't located the exact wire but reaching across to the under the glove box and giving things a quick jiggle normally gets things working.

As you say it's getting colder so I'll be removing the blower and changing all the connectors when I've got time, mine was obviously kitted out for a taxi at some point so I have quite a bit of aftermarket wiring floating about behind the glove box

Just as an aside: I've removed miles of wiring from a few cars were they've had after market amplifiers, alarms etc. and not only are they often fitted in badly, they0ve been removed in such a haphazard manner that I'm surprised the car hadn't already caught fire. If I were you I'd have all that out, or at least make sure it's not getting ready to make a barbeque of you...
