My horn has stopped working, has anyone any ideas what to check first?

Apparently the car's a 2001 so it could be either. It has 4 contacts so it usually gets hard to work before it goes completely dead. While the battery stuff on that is good advice (it's usually the central locking that dies if you get it wrong) the design is different.
