Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Questions about the keypad immobiliser

Post by Menophanes »

My 1997 1.9TD has an immobiliser with a fold-down keypad above the fusebox and a red light at the left-hand end of the central switch-panel, beside the hazard-flasher switch; this seems to be the only security device present. Having no owner's handbook to refer to, I need to ask some questions about this; please forgive me if they are rather elementary – I have not encountered such a device before.

1. What is the best thing to do if one accidentally enters the wrong code? (I actually did this a few weeks ago and, perhaps foolishly, tried again, with the result that the keypad went catatonic; the red light flashed at double speed and the keypad refused to respond to any further input. After about half an hour I found it had reset itself, allowing me to enter the code again – this time correctly – and drive away.)

2. Is there any special procedure when disconnecting and reconnecting the battery? (Here the Haynes manual is confusing, referring as it does to a separate alarm system (with a reset button and red light on the centre console) which does not seem to exist on my car. I have also read lozz's Knowledge Base article bsi manual, battery disconnect/reconnect precautions etc., but this seems to apply only to later types of security system. Another complication is that the remote-locking key is utterly dead, so that the various activation/deactivation procedures involving its use are not open to me.}

3. Will the keypad code still work after the battery has been removed and replaced?

1 think you can enter the code 3 times then you have to wait while it resets

2 never had a proplem remoing batterys and refitting

3 yes

if you want to disconnect the key pad
start engine then with the engine running remove the plug from the back of the key pad then you dont need to use the code

Mine is a 1997 model and I had to follow the 3 minute rule to disconnect and re-connect the battery:
