I called in at an auto electrical place yesterday to ask how much he'd charge to fix the lose connection on my immobiliser key pad. If it was cheap enough I'd get him to do it and save my sausage fingers.
The guy started spouting on about not worth fixing it as they keep breaking and you need to remove the software from the ecu blah, blah, blah £125.
I said I'd just disconnect the keypad it's cheaper, then he said if your battery goes flat it will reset the ecu and you wont be able to start the car without setting the immobiliser back up yadda, yadda, wires get broken, no schematics for repair, yadda, yadda dead car.
Can someone please confirm he was talking utter sh*te
The immobiliser on my old car was disconnected when I bought it and I had the battery off to do jobs and never had a problem.

Dunno if he's talking shite or not, but I do reckon if you disconnect your immobilizer, that could invalidate your car insurance. According to them, your car is insured based on risk; this risk is apparently assessed based on the security systems fitted to your car. Disconnecting your immobilizer means the car is technically at a bigger risk of being stolen and therefore your insurance quote is no longer sufficient.
Or some bollocks like that; the insurers will make up any old sh*t to ensure they get your money and you get f*ck all if something happens to your car and they pick up on any undeclared modifications.

Found out from the previous owner of mine that the keypad had been disconnected. The manual does state that the remote can be programmed to arm the immobiliser instead of using the keypad. I assumed that's what my remote does, though I have disconnected the battery and it started with no problem. Have no code number for mine so good job it did!

I am planning on locating the lose wire and fixing it, I just got fed up with having to drop the fuse panel cover and jiggling the wires every time I started the car.

i have a d8 with the keypad disconected that has had the battery taken off more times than i can count[in fact it hasnt had one on for 2 months as its a spares car] but had to move it today so just chucked the battery on and away she went.
