Newbie, new car - Electrical issues

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Newbie, new car - Electrical issues

Post by julian »

Hello guys and congratulations on a great site. I am a great fan of 406s’ having driven one across France on business a few years ago. 8)

I have recently bought a 2001 2.0 HDi 90 with 117,000 miles on the clock for my daily 60 mile commute to work and back. I got the car cheap as it has a few electrical jobs which need sorting so any advice would be appreciated.

1)The wipers do not always stop in the park position and continue ‘run’ until they appear to ‘time out’. The park switch in the wiper motor works fine so I am going to re-boot the multiplex at the weekend to see if this helps?

2)The driver’s side window is erratic, I assume this is just a switch or broken wire as it does sometimes work and all the other window are fine.

3)The remote audio stalk is missing, assumed broken off. Can I purchase secondhand stalk and just plug it in?

4)The dashboard light behind the fuel gauge has failed, is it a big job to replace?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Welcome :)

Worn relay?
2)The driver’s side window is erratic, I assume this is just a switch or broken wire as it does sometimes work and all the other window are fine.
I find when I'm stuck at lights in the rain and having a fag (window slightly open) water will often drip onto the window switches. Could be a bit of mild corrosion in the contacts?
3)The remote audio stalk is missing, assumed broken off. Can I purchase secondhand stalk and just plug it in?
From what I've read it's not a massively difficult job but it does involve removing the steering wheel. Someone else can probably answer this better than me
4)The dashboard light behind the fuel gauge has failed, is it a big job to replace?
Not big, but it could be easier. Basically you need to unscrew the main lump of plastic from around the dashboard (just held on by 3(?) torx screws above the display iirc, and pull it off (being very careful not to break the drivers door side air vent like I managed to!), then it's 5 torx screws I think to remove the display. The bulb holders are easy to replace. While I was doing mine I found that by sticking a bulb in the position for the 'doors open' warning light, I got a little bit of extra functionality :)

Just a quick update on the electrical issues for your information.

1) Wipers
The wipers still do not park and i have traced this back to a duff BSi unit. Quotes for a replacement one have come in at between £250-£350 fully programmed. However I found a company in kent (bba-reman) that will repair my unit for £125 quid. Anyone used them?

2) Drivers door window
This was down to worn out rubber contacts in the switch. I stripped this down sorted out the contacts and the window is now fine.

3) Audio stalk
Bought a stalk for ten quid, plugged it in, all ok

4) Dash Lights
All changed, and just a couple of broken lugs.

Thanks for your help.
