Anything to look for in particular when these don't work?both the normal brake lights work ok,but nothing lights up on the high level one??

What car spec you got Paul? I know the later 406s have a fuse for it tied up with a couple of other nicknacks which might help pin point it.

Fuse f17 under the steering column 10 amp on the later HDi. 03+
Or f11 10amp on the early ones. (left hand stop light and high rise lamp) 02-
Do your other lights work though?

Try this and see if the colours match up haynes are famous for cockups and the 406 hdi book wasnt their best work...

I fixed mine the other day mate.
Open the boot and you will see rubber cover on the top right hand side. pull it away from the boot lid and you will see a broken wire. If its the earth wire which is the (yellow and green) wire then all you have to do is take off the spoiler with the brake light on (4 spline drive screws) and join the wire broken earth wire to the earth strap that is bolted to the boot lid. For some reason that wire is connected to the car body and isnt really needed to go through the boot lid so just join it to that wire under the spoiler.
Works fine.
