Cluster swap

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Cluster swap

Post by ccordex406 »

How you doing fellas....

I'm starting a project that includes MFD-stalks-digital clock and cluster so my ride looks 21st century. So far, I've got the MFD and the stalks (with some help from 406uk) but Im getting stuck with the cluster/instruments.

I'm aware that I'm supposed to get the 2 pin cluster but I'm not sure which one would fit my car (functionally and fitting) so I need a little guidance from the forum.

My car is 98' 406 sedan (vs002626 service box) which came with a huge clock instead of the rev counter (gas gauge, clock, speedometer, odometer, temp)

Does the coupe rev counter fits my car?
I saw a couple of clusters that have the oil temp (not sure if im correct), would it work for my car?

Thanks in advance for your help!

What engine is it? There are a million (slight exaggeration) different types of instrument cluster for 406s.

My GLX spec has the extra dials but its a 2 litre. The 1.9 TD came with that dash but I'm unsure about the 1.8.

I think you'd be best getting a cluster from a higher spec 1.8 (not sure if the 2.0 turbo panels were the same). Could you post a picture of your current cluster?

I know a couple of people have fitted dials with the oil level gauge to 1.9s and 2.1s (diesels) and it's worked (i.e. the sensor is already fitted) but I've no idea about a 1.8. I would think it would be the same and it should just work, but I guess there's no real guarantee without either having a look (which is hard since it's a pain to get at) or just trying it :)

Can't answer you about Coupe clusters fitting, though I'm sure someone else can!

Maybe for a 2 litre but anything else with an ML gearbox might give you trouble 'cos I don't think cars with BE gearboxes use the transducer (cable?)

My car is 1.8 manual tranny. It came with a huge clock instead of the rev counter so I wanna do this project.

I've seen a couple of clusters on ebay that have 4 clocks (fuel, rev, speed, temp) just like my stock one but I wanna get any info on previous experiencies. The clusters come from coupes tho. Will they fit?

A cluster from a coupé will physically fit, I just don't know why they have a different part number, perhaps the wiring is different :? Perhaps it would be better not to use a cluster from a coupé :(

If we ignore the coupé ones then, and ones without oil temperature, MPH, a clock, automatic, lpg and diesel, there is only 1:
6101E7 - GRADUATION KMS/H AND REV COUNTER WITH NEEDLE AND OIL TEMP + LEVEL INDICATOR AND 4 DOOR SALOON
-ditto- GRADUATION KMS/H AND REV COUNTER WITH NEEDLE AND OIL TEMP + LEVEL INDICATOR AND 5 DOOR ESTATE OR GRADUATION KMS/H AND REV COUNTER WITH NEEDLE AND OIL TEMP + LEVEL INDICATOR AND 5 DOORS FAMILY ESTATE

Obviously this must be from a D8 as D9 clocks are again different.

I wonder if the difference on the coupe is the chrome ring around the clocks.
Remember - it only takes a few inches of water to drown a 406 don't make the same mistake I made! The V6 Exec is no more.

Even the clocks (instruments) themselves have a different part number :?

I didnt realize that pugs had such a complicated swap procedures....Any other ideas?
I thought that I would get away with a 1.8 D8 cluster.....but I guess not!

I was going through a post about interchangeable parts between D8´s and 9´s :

Intrument clusters - only interchangeable between similar aged models. D8 units will fit any D8, pre-multiplex D9 will fit any D9 etc. Obviously petrol clocks into diesels will cause inaccurate readings, but believe it or not, they do still work!

In my experience, never underestimate the complexity of a ''simple'' swap on these things. Many a project has floundered after some one saying, ''well, how many different ones did pug make?''
