Noob with indicator issues

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Noob with indicator issues

Post by Guinness »

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and was hoping some of you might be able to help me out please?

I've had an 02 plate 406 110 estate for a few years now and as long as I've owned it has had an issue with the indicator switch, I believe it is a common problem. Up to now I have lived with it as it hasn't caused me too much bother but it seems to have gotten a little worse and was touch and go on the last MOT whether it should pass or not.

If I indicate and turn right when I realign the wheel the stalk goes to left indicate rather than stopping in neutral. Also, the stalk is very sensitive and a little floppy and when touched it occasionally flashes the main beams. Oh and my airbag light is on.
I'm confident I can replace the part myself, that's not an issue I just need to know i'm buying the correct part. So what information do I need to ensure I find the correct replacement part, do I need to remove the original unit first?
I intend to find a local breaker and buy from there.

Thanks,
Steve.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

There's a lot of info about this on the forum especially if you search COM2000 which is what the indicator unit is called.

Check this out.....viewtopic.php?f=10&t=17391

My old 406 had the same problem.

Hi & welcome. 8)

I've just replaced mine using steve earwigg's excellent howto in the knowledge base, (as jasper says and which I strongly recommend you read).

COM2000's are expensive and difficult to find at a sensible price, quickly. Don't worry about it for the MOT - they test the indicators with the car stationary, so long as they flash when they should, it will pass. It won't fail on self-cancelling problems.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Thanks chaps, I have read that guide, very helpful it is too.

It did fail on the last MOT but only because of the sensitivity of the main beam, it was flashing as he moved the stalk to indicate (this doesn't happen when I indicate because I do it properly). Anyway, I managed to get him to change his mind and put it as an advisory instead when I went for a re-test (a big argument later).

I would like to get the part replaced even if it gets through the next MOT but i'm having difficulty finding the right part, I spoke to the main stealer and they have told me I need to get the number off the back of my unit, I don't fancy removing it first and putting it back while I search for the replacement.

Hi Guinness,
Welcome to the forum, This is interesting to me as I purchased a 2002 rapier estate 4 weeks ago. when on test drive I notice that when indicating right out of a junction instead of cancelling the indicators would go on to indicating Left!.
Well silly me  I thought this would be a cheep easy fix, so went ahead & bought the otherwise very nice condition, one owner from new with F.S.H, 78thou & all receipts / old mot's car. I thought it was a realy good find (on the whole I'm still v happy with it,pic's to follow on next nice bit of weather!)
Anyway I joined this forum & started to read up on this (common) problem! :x , on going through my receipts it would appear that the last owner took it in to the garage he used for all his servicing / repairs & mot's At 50 ish thou about 4 years ago. To investigate this very problem & they put on the bill that they could find nothing wrong! :? .
Well this has been anoying me for 4 week's now so I started to look into it, I don't fancy going down the route of second hand as unless you road test the car it's coming out of,as you have no way of knowing if it's got any of the same faults, & all the breakers on ebay want £60-£95 pounds for them.
After a email to my local stealers with my car details they want, are you ready for this £374.95+vat!!!!!! , after I'd picked myself up, I contacted G.S.F thay can do a new Velleo unit for my car detail's for a much more reasnoble £154+ vat so just under £180 all in, alot I know, but a dam sight better than more than twice that at the stealers for the same part in a Pug Box!!!! .
So my conclusion is for now that Because I am only displaying the indicator fault at the mo, to leave well alone untill lights ect: start to play up. But might try some foam under my stalk arm see if that help's  .
Hope this helps Paul. :)
