Dashboard Camera Install

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Dashboard Camera Install

Post by jonsowman »

Hi all,

Decided to give a dashboard camera a go, and went for this one after a reasonable review on Youtube from Techmoan. Cost me £40 + £5 postage, does 720p video at 30fps, including sound. Also has a G-sensor to tag "events" which might be collisions.

You need to provide a ground, and a 12V line that is powered when the ignition is on. Typically you take this from the radio headunit, but happily my 406 had an unused connector in the headlining that had 12V and ground!

So here goes. First, remove the interior light unit:

Then undo the Torx screws and remove the overhead console. That orange connector is the one we'll be butchering:

Take the red (12V ignition) and green (ground) from the connector and cut them, strip them, and insert into terminal blocks:

Tuck all the unused cable away, cable tying to the plastic so that it doesn't rattle against the roof, and replace the console:

Done!

And here's the test drive video. Be sure to change the quality to 720p!

Thats good quality video, does it start recording as soon as the car is turned on or do you need to press a button, and how often do you need to change the SD card?

Automatically starts recording as soon as it powers up, don't have to touch it at all.

I've got an 8GB card in there at the moment and it reckons 2.5 hours. It splits them into 5 minute videos, and overwrites the oldest one once the card is full. Will get a bigger card for it at some point :)
