Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

central locking fault 01 406 estate 2.0 hdi help

Post by alan406est »

hi ive recently bought a nice clean 406 hdi estate, however its now developed 2 faults, 1st fault central locking not working, new key purchased and programmed, no joy, checked fuses in the bsi - ok. using the key in the lock isnt any use either, its as thought theres no power to the locking, rear doors were deadlocked but a friend opened them with planet diagnositcs, also scanned and no faults shown. the inside locks do nothing either only lock each door individually, also noticed that on the dispaly in dash only rear doors and boot are shown when open. also no interior light operation with front doors... have taken both doors off and checked wiring --no faults found! please help?????
2nd fault is indicators flashing fast, hazard lights even faster, so far have replaced all bulbs = no change, unplugged tow-bar wiring loom = no change, i did notice removing a bulb makes no difference to the speed., any help welcome

Hi there, sorry for the delay but I reckon you've listed too many faults for our minds to deal with

If we take them one at a time I reckon we should start with the door locks (and then maybe the remote issue will make sense too).

When you say you took the door off, I don't think you mean you took the door physically off, you took it to pieces to look inside, yes? I'm looking at a schematic of a door lock and it has 3 switches, I'm not sure what all 3 do but I know 1 works the interior light while another tells the BSI if the door is open or closed. I doubt both of these switches have failed (but it's always possible).

Have you done stuff like check the 5 fuses in the BSI? The central locking fuse is fuse A I think. Did you check the connectors where the door looms meet the cabin loom for corrosion of just general unpluggedness?

I suspect someone will tell you to check for broken wires (e.g. if there was no earth none of the switches would work as the earth signal) sometimes the wires break inside so they look ok...

I think we're going to need your RPO (DAM, build code) at some point (2001 is a big change and there seem to have been a bumper crop of 406s that year) - this will do viewtopic.php?f=18&t=19141&hilit=rpo#p196775

Btw did it come with the fault or did it develop while you had the car?

Hi thanks for your reply. Yes i did actually remove both front doors and check the wiring looms that way, not that hard to do and easier than with the doors on.And yes i also hard the door cads off!
I think i may try a good 2nd hand door lock first and go from there, but keep hearing about faulty bsi units
also checked all fuses and fuse A is fine as are all the others!
Also checked for bad connections etc no luck there

keep on hunting these faults thanks

Blimey  I hope you had some assistance 'cos I can imagine things suddenly getting rather heavy...

That's odd because we don't ( I think one but I can't remember how long ago). The usual failure is the a/c relay on semi-mux cars. I'm sure we'd be interested in any links so we know what to watch out for.

Personally I think I'd check the signalling for the lock switches before I changed a lock. As you didn't complain about having to drag the wiring out of the doors I'm going to assume full-mux (which probably means your indicator fault is the com2000 :( ) - r/h front:

As you can see it's all earth-switched. The program isn't helping me much with identifying wires (it's not the boot lock ffs :frown: ) but I'd pull the door connector and check that the switches are putting shorts between the signal wires and the earth.

I guess you can test across the motor but that might be down to the BSI not knowing if the doors are closed (or more probably not open, or missing even...)

Hi there not sure if this is a help but from previous ex on other cars fast flashing on indicaters normally points to an earth problem this could have effects on other electrical circuits .ie bleed off of power and false triggering on things like locks and alarms ...only a suggestion but worth a look

At present having a bsi unit coded to the car, hopefully this will cure these faults!
