Starter Motor Replacement

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Starter Motor Replacement

Post by adape2003 »

Evening guys,

My 406 HDi 90 is showing strong signs of a failing starter motor and I am intending to replace it. As I understand it there are different power rated starters available and I have read that it's likely mine is 1.4KW. Some folk recommend going for the 1.7KW variant to improve cranking speed and hopefully cold starting. Can anyone tell me the number of teeth on a standard starter? 11 seems to be a popular number but I need to be sure, and I don't want to pull the old one out just to count teeth!

Any comments on the above most gratefully received :D

Thanks,
Adam.

Hi mate, I didn't realise the Hdi statrters have different number of teeth - I thought they were all the same?

I have a Hdi 110 starter in my Hdi 2.2 and it fits perfect, although the part numbers are different.

If you put your VIN number up then it can be checked and compared with other variants.

Its a 25 minute job to do, easier to unbolt the fuel filter housing and flip it over to get better access to the starter.

Hi there,
The reason I ask about teeth numbers is that several online retailers quote the number of teeth as 10/11 rather than just a single number. I'm probably reading too much into it as Euro Car Parts comes up with three options that, although from different manufacturers, are all the same spec. It's just that they quote the number of teeth as 10/11......that's what's confusing me. Probably just gonna order one and bite the bullet.

While I have your ear on this matter, however, how important is it to maintain 12V to the system when changing the motor? Will any coding for keys or radio be lost if I power down completely?

Thanks,
Adam.

HI, just make sure you leave the car for 5 mins with nothing active i.e door lights, ignition etc otherwise this can cause problems. I got away with it but other members have not been so fortunate.

Have a butchers through this before hand.

Your radio is coded to the car so will only need to reset the time on the MFD after reconnecting the battery. Do you have a good set of allen sockets and torx bits? I got a 'Seally' set from Amazon for £15 and it has been a godsend for doing starter, back plates and loads of jobs on the 406.

Thanks for the reply; I'll check the thread out you suggest. With regards Allen keys and torx yes I have some good ones I have used on the old girl many times so should be fine tool-wise. The new motor should be here by the weekend so weather permitting it'll get fitted soon.

Well my new motor turned up yesterday afternoon so I decided to crack on and fit it. All went well and the car came back to life when I reconnected the battery (thanks for the info GingerMagic). I turned the key and woaaaaaaaaa the engine cranked so much faster, and sounded like a new car too! Unbelievable difference :cheesy: Once I get my surcharge back on the old unit this job stands me about £70 and it was money well spent.
