Anyone like a challenge???

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Anyone like a challenge???

R reg 1.9 diesel 406 estate
no dipped beam
main beam ok

changed the lighting stalk - still no good
turned the connectors around on the headlight bulbs so main beam on stalk activates dipped beam in bulb - works OK. MOT man won't be happy though

12v is live on F5 and F20 on inside fusebox

any ideas?

Is there a relay? If so, any idea where it is? Can't see one on the wiring diagram i have in my Haynes manual.

i would have thought there would be one, if there isnt one on the diagram then there probably isnt, i thought the fuses for the lights are under the bonnet, have you checked for continuity between the switch and the headlamp plug?

No, I haven't but I suppose I should. If there's no connectivity then I'm not sure what to do. Thread a new cable through?

if you have continuity between the switch and the plug, then you have no supply to the switch which could easily be fixed, but if there is no continuity, then you have a break, but also im sure there should be a relay, haynes wiring diagrams are frequenty wrong so there maybe one
but if there is no relay just run a new wiring loom

James is way on the mark.... in fact he is soooo hot his pi$$ is boiling !

Try reterminating the spade connectors for the bulbs, also as james previously mentioned try a continuity test these never fail. If you have a test lamp connect the crocodile clamp/clip to the batteries earth and then stab the lights feed with the ignition / switch in the ON position. If the test lamp comes on you know its the termination... corroded* ?

I highly doubt it will be a break anywhere in the dash as all wires are secured, if this is a problem that has only recently developed then look at the wires under the bonnet and trace them back as far as you can, if the switch hads already been replaced then check that there isn't any breaks on the connector to the furthest point on the cable..

The connector in the back of the stalk could have been broken when removed refitted..

Thanks for the advice.

Must be a break between inside fuse (coz that's live when switch is on for dipped beam) and the headlights. Only one fuse so must be a common wire to the front somewhere. from there it must split to both lights.

not easy to trace so will probably have to lop a wire through somehow
