Fuel pump removal

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Fuel pump removal

Post by runner1 »

Hi folks I want to check the fuel strainer in the tank, but struggling to remove the ring without damaging the raised edges! I know there is a tool available but has anyone come up with a better solution than simply hitting it loose with a screwdriver..?

I have had the same problem, its very tight all the way. I don't know of a tool although I expect the agents have one, I have undone them by putting a screwdriver against the lugs and hitting it with a hammer, you need quite a heavy one. The lugs break off one by one you then have to dig the screwdriver into the plastic.

To refit them I tried greasing the threads, hardly helped at all, I then took a Stanley knife to the thread in the cover an pared it down, even that didn't improve it much and I had to use the hammer method to reassemble it. Its also quite a job getting the thread to engage at the start, you have to press down on it while rotating.

Cheers folks, got it off in the end but then realised the bloody tank will have to come out as nothing fits through the hole! I suppose they changed the design at some point but didn't change the bodywork :-/ Thought about opening the hole up but do not want to butcher it...

I really do hope the strain filter is just a bit gummed up after all this!

I lost the will to live with this and got my tin snips out to make the access hole bigger. After all that the strainer was pretty clean!!! I applied lots of lithium grease to the thread of the retaining nut, made sure it went on without any cross threads and hammered it all back in place!

I also checked the MAF while at it. This I did after seeing one of the vids posted above by DDD... Cleaned the sensor elements with cotton wool buds dipped in isopropyl alcohol and I swear the car is a little bit more respondent!

Someone had already done that to mine so it was just a question of bending the sections out to remove it and the back in again when refitted. What a ridiculous idea. I had to do the same job on the C5 but the hole is much bigger so no problem.
