A/C not working on idle

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

A/C not working on idle

Post by M2ks »

Hi! Been lurking for a while now, forum has so much information that I didn't need to post until now.

Bought my first 406 in January and it has been wonderful. The only problem is that a/c won't blow cold when idling. It's fine while cruising, so i hooked up PP2000 and found out that it occasionally switches the compressor on and a few seconds later high pressure safety kicks in.

I've got a video of it:

Also I have a fault in the engine ecu - FRIC (cooling function integral with the ECU). Consistency between the fan speed and the setting. I have never heard the fan work, even now with 30 degrees outside. Never seen the temp go higher than 90 either. I might go for an "enthusiastic" drive in the afternoon to see if the fan starts working.

Could these be connected?

Is a 110 HDi, build code 9321.

Hi and welcome aboard. 8)

Your fan is either not working at all, or has something wrong with it.
The engine ecu controls the fan to either cool the water, or the a/c condenser. Pug diesels rarely need the fan to help with the radiator cooling, even in hot weather, which is why you don't have an overheating issue. The condenser pressure would be OK if the fan was working, which is why it's OK when you're driving along.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

That's what i was thinking, so off came the fan...

Looks like it's a lost cause. Tried to measure the resistance - nothing. Gave it 12v from the battery, nothing. Seems like I need to find a new one, but can't find the part number.

It's not made to come apart, if i have some time later, I'll try to get it open with a grinder.
