Harness for towbar.. plug and play?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Harness for towbar.. plug and play?

Post by notrix »

Hi

I want to install a towbar on my 406 estate. Does anyone know if there is supposed to be a harness for this in the car already or if I will have to do a lot of wiring by myself?

There *should* be a socket by one of the tail lights (left?) but I'm not sure if that only applies to cars that left the factory with a tow bar. Have a look but don't hold your breath...

Btw I had an Ashtry estate I fitted a towbar to, it had a connector but the advice was to clip it off as the other half of the connector cost a fortune.

There was no harness on mine, though there is a main power feed which is very useful for the split charging

I think there is a plug and play harness available but they cost a fortune,i can remember seeing one somewhere when I wired up my towbar but can't remember where.I think you basically unplug the input plug to the N/S rear light and plug into the p/play harness and then the p/play harness back into the light. It's not a difficult car to wire up though, all I did was splice into the relevant feeds to the rear lights etc and as said there is a large red wire in the N/S rear light plug that is used for split charging and you just have to put a fuse in the relevant spare way in the fuse box to liven it up.(I think it's the N/S)

It is in the nearside & I'll check my post's for the missing fuse
I got mine of a scraper, but check out ebay there's sellers on there selling complete kit's for £80
Mine cost me £40 plus fuel + half a day to get it off & home, Then half a day to clean up & paint followed by half a day to fit.
If I was doing it again I'd buy a new kit

Wow.. so much great advice.. thanks guys :)

Guess it will be very doable in one way or another then.. I'm not afraid of cutting wires so I will figure it out.

Would appreciate any information about the fuse though, sounds useful!

Fuse F15 in the fuse box bellow the steering wheel in the drivers footwell four quarter turn plastic screws,
pop in a 16 - 20 amp fuse & bingo the large red wire (terminal four) on the nearside rear light cluster is live :cheesy:
you will notice that it goes to nothing on the light side, it is there for powering tow bar electrics (twin socket) you will only need this if you want a spilt charging system.
Don't forget, leave the fuse OUT until you've completed your wiring  .
Hope this helps DDD.
