The ccar is currently on driveway with a towel and clingfilm around the door any ideas welcomed many thanks for reading.

Re: 406 HDI, GLX Drivers window stuck down
Hi, welcome.
This is a common fault - the switches are often exposed to the elements when the door or window is open.

Hope this helps...
P.s. If it turns out the motor is faulty ( the window motor, not the car...
) I can guide you through replacing it as my passenger side was faulty when I got my 406 and its relatively easy.

You should eliminate the switch as faulty first - will the window move up if you try using the switch repeatedly..???
My old Hdi90 had a dodgy switch and I had to use the switch repeated for about 2 minutes before it finally went up or down - can you borrow a working switch from a mate - or look at local scrapyards for one ( buy the switch but fill your pockets with bulbs etc while you are there..
) you can test the switch in the scrapyards car park before driving home.

Aaah, a nice easy fix.
Keep the old switch and strip it down and see if you can clean the contacts - get it working then bung it on eBay....
