Cooling fan

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Cooling fan

Post by hammerman »

Hi all, long time no see!!Car doing well,211000 miles now.Tiny bit of clutch slip in 5th on the motorway with the caravan on the back,so maybe this year(12 years old lol)might be the year for its first clutch and flywheel.Anyways,A/C.
After having issues with my a/c and spending silly money only to be told the condensor was leaking,i replaced the condensor yesterday(old one was knackard lol).Got a new one from GSF for £67 with my discount.Replacing it was simple really,as per past knowledge based articals.I used new o rings. After spending money on it and being told there was no leaks only for it to leak out,i kinda lost faith in my local a/c places,so brought some EZ chill.Mock me,i dont care.Anyways, the compressor now comes on when you switch the a/c on,and the engine revs drop a touch too so i know its working, but the cooling fan is not working.
I have dissconnected the green cts, start engine back up,beep, stop light comes on and fan spins fast,so the fan is working.I went for a run last night, got home and left the car running for 45 mins, revving it too.Temp never moved aboved 88,so i couldnt get the fan to come on.I know the temp gauge works ok cause pulling our caravan up telegraph hill at easter the temp went up too 108 lol.
I have found the black relay box, mounted next to the battery.I have 3 big 40a fuses, all look ok,and 3 green relays, all with the same part number on them. How do i go about testing/seeing if the relays energise etc??
Just on a side note,my wifes car has a/c and i tested that with the ez chill gauge, and i get simaler readings as on mine.
And my car is a 2003/53 HDi 110 SE estate. :D

Hi,

You have said that the fan is working when the sensor is unplugged so this must mean that the fan relay is working too. The relays you mention in the quote above are for the interior air heater resister and the fan relay is one relay on the front of the battery box. Earlier models had three relays but these are in the fan unit itself not by the battery.

My fan wouldn't work recently because some idiot (me) had changed settings in PP2000. If you have PP2000 maybe worth checking??

NO need to worry,i`ve fixed it!!!I now have ICE COLD air con at last :D
I connected a new bottle of gas/oil,and pumped some more in.The cooling fan started for a few seconds, and stopped. So i pumped some more in,and now the a/c is working correctly and blowing ice cold.It would seem i dont not have enough gas/pressure in the system.Car has been running for 45 mins on the drive with a/c flat out.Pump starts and stops as it should, and cooling fan stays spinning, and a/c blowing very cold. There are some drawbacks to the diy a/c fill, but i shall make a post on that.
