Hi
Just got a 096 type battery to get higher CCA of 780, however there's about a 1cm gap from when the hold down bracket is completely screwed down to the top of the battery.
Can I put something down in the bottom of the battery box to bridge this 1cm gap? What would be best?
Thanks

Re: Battery (spacer)
Weird, I didn't need any spacers for my 096 (Varta E44) battery. Have you removed the bottom steel plate or something?
I had to remove the plastic clip that's mounted on the steel plate (the one that kept the small battery from sliding around). But if the steel plate is kept in position I don't see why you'd need spacers. Have you checked the dimensions of the new battery?
Also note, the lid won't fit (it's not needed either, though). Instead I cut out holes in the removable battery pole covers to fit the wires to have just a slight extra protection against accidental shorts.

I didn't notice any steel plate, just plastic bottom of battery box (car is a 2003 2.2hdi) The battery I had in there before was a 027TE which is shorter width wise than the type 096, but the hold down bracket was holding it secure. The 096 I have now is a Bosch S5. Both listed at 190mm height so a bit odd the S5 is about 1cm under the hold down bracket.8Jb9 wrote:Weird, I didn't need any spacers for my 096 (Varta E44) battery. Re: Battery (spacer)
That does indeed sound very strange. 027 and 096 are both 190mm tall (the dimension that matters here). The steel plate is #4 in the illustration above. Perhaps you should have a look in your battery box and see if you can see it (admittedly difficult with 096 blocking the view)?
Something must have been removed when you took out the 027 since it no longer fits. Do you still have the old battery?

Yes, I had that when I swapped the almost new battery from my scrapped 106 into the 406.
I just rifled through my paperback books till I found one of the right thickness to place underneath
the battery. A Bluffers Guide , as I recall.
