thanks all - been away so only just got back on the case.
pulled the fan out and stuck a dc psu on there, the fan doesnt spin - only judders
is this a lack of power from the psu or a knackered fan ?
psu is 12v / 1.5a, i will try to see if i can test w/ car battery

Craig,
this probably doesn't need saying but I'll say it anyway...be careful when you put power to the fan.... if possible clamp the base in something as I saw a guy test one of these with a jump pack and it launched itself off the table

ah - thanks i had thought of that but will make sure its clamped extra tight now

Re: New Owner - Fan/AirCon issues
Ok so the fan works fine - could it be the slider that controls its speed - running out of ideas here.
Re: New Owner - Fan/AirCon issues
is it the ignition block?
mine done the same thing, bypassed it and it works.... look through this has come up several times and there is a how to guide.. I think Lozz done it.

Re: New Owner - Fan/AirCon issues
I hope nobody minds me hi-jacking this post but ive got similar problems with heater fan as well the other day fan stopped working, i tapped the motor and it started (bit like the 405's) but today the fan is running constantly fast even when i lower the setting to off.
I got a bit worried and saw the melting connector and very hot wires so I disconected the connector to stop the fan.
Help please. Keithg (car is 1999 D8 2.0 hdi exec estate)

Re: New Owner - Fan/AirCon issues
this might sound like a stupid question, I take it the black and red cables are the power nad earth cables, if they where wired straight to battery, would if be on all the time, as want to test the fanGary406 wrote:under the glovebox is the main connector for the power. i would check here 1st its common for the connector start to melt
its directly under the fan behind the glovebox ..
it will probably look like this or worse . it could be this or something else. but its worth checking here 1st as its easiest
and using some 30amp connector blocks is what mine looks like now

bit of a update, turns out it was the brown connector block that was knackered, the one that the wires un in to on fan, rewired that and its worked great since
