Charging Problem

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

There are some fuse diargams here http://www.peugeotlogic.com/#fuses but I can't find any Maxi fuses for either the glowplug relay or alternator :(

Have you checked all the earth's?
 Fell off my chair laughing at that one.

You definitely should have battery voltage on the big terminal and the small one too - it is an exciter - powers the rotor - alternators have no residual magnetism, so cannot produce an output without some magnetising of that there twirly-bit.

The nearest thing I have to 1.9TD circuit diagram shows the battery +ve connected to the starter, then a second cable on the same terminal at the starter going to the alternator output terminal. Maybe you have a dodgy connection at the starter and this is where you're losing the alternator to battery conection.

Carefully put a jump lead from big terminal on alternator to battery +ve put small wire on small terminal check if ignition light is on start engine ignition light should go out battery should be charging, if this works replace battery +ve lead.

Hi all
Sorry for the age to reply to tell you of the solution to this, I forgot my password and have only just recovered it.
Anyways the problem was a really stupid thing as was my fault. It was simply that when I removed the alternator I tucked the second red wire (one of the two that go onto the big alternator terminal) up behind the loom/pump area to get it out of the way, and as it was a couple of weeks before I refitted the the alt I forgot about this wire!!!!!!
Well I am getting a little old and the old grey matter aint what it used to be!!!!
So I am very sorry to all of you that took the time to help me and also to my car who I cussed so many times!!!
Thanks again all
Nigel
