Fitting new starter motor
Would like a bit of info about fitting new starter.Gradually been getting sluggish so tried a new battery last winter seemed to be a bit better but now after this bit of bad weather needs a bit of cranking to start ,really need to have a look at the starter .Am hesitant because car became dead last time I messed with disconnection the battery I thought I had done the 3 minute rule to put the bsi. I had to get someone to sort the ecu/bsi with his laptop.I would like to hear the best way to do this ,to be able to take the starter off without any problems

Re: Fitting new starter motor
Hi, fitting a starter is quite easy - if you have access to a hex bit socket set and an 8mm spanner then the rest is normal size tools....
Disconnect battery ( wait 5 mins with keys NOT in the ignition.. ) and remove the grey MAF connector and lift the air box up and rest it towards the back of the engine - you can remove it if you like but its not necessary. If you have a blue connector under the air box, don't forget to unplug this too.
Remove the top intercooler pipe to get access to the back of the starter, undo the two nuts holding the wires on. The front of the starter, battery side, is held on with a 16mm ( I think ) long bolt, and 2 hex type bolts - these are quite easy to get to and undo. One of these has a wire attached too.
Wiggle the starter motor out and get the new one in quick before forgetting how you did it...
There is probably something I have missed but this is a relatively straightforward job. I have only done it on a 2.2Hdi, but I think only the top intercooler pipe is different on a 2.0Hdi
The last one I changed took 45 minutes, and I am not a mechanic by a long stretch.
If you have a petrol engine, ignore the above as its completely different and right knuckle bleeding, swear inducing job.....
