STOP light flahing intermittent

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

STOP light flahing intermittent

Post by elmtreeandy »

Hi folks, I have a 1998, yes 1998 2.0 HDI which occasionally develops a fault causing the STOP light to flash but only at speeds above 70mph (I live in Spain so at 120 kph the light will flash). It stays on until I drop below 70mph then disappears. I have checked all liquid levels and all seems to be in order. Any clues or direction in which to look? Thanks in advance, Andrew

Can't think of any obvious suggestions, but are you sure it's speed and not engine RPM related? (might narrow it down a bit).

Thanks for the quick reply. It is difficult to say as I don't sit on revs in lower gears and have only noticed it coming on while cruising just over 70mph. Will get the wife (I am out of commission temporarily due to back surgery) to run it at similar revs in fourth to see what happens.

It's so strange, if this light STOP blinks see the water tank if you don't have the level.

It might seem a bit ovious, but have you checked fluid level electrical connections?

I reckon it's to do with the radiator cooling fan, have a look at this..........viewtopic.php?t=1452&start=0#p13555

Assuming your aircon still works? then I think the fan is meeting high air resistance over a certain road speed and flagging the stop light. I may be wrong here but I can't think of anything else.

Thanks for the replies. I have looked through the link provided and will get wife to pull front end to bits tomorrow before the sun comes up and check the fan electronics. Its still a touch warm here (35 degrees) for working under bonnet. Will keep you informed of what I find. Thanks again.

Resurrecting an old thread, my stop light is flashing up but not all the time, if i turn the Aircon off it stops. I have a 2000 406 estate. Is the radiator thing relevant to newer cars
