Researching OBD readers.

Howdy good people. Just a quickie - I have an engine management light issue on my 2.0 110 HDI 53 plate estate (engine temp too hot but gauge says not) plus a couple of other recurring messages (anti pollution system defective) and my question is: To avoid giving lots of money to some technician who is going to press a few buttons and try in vain to convince me that whatever the cost their cure is best, what OBD diagnostic kit do you good people recommend (anything considered from cheapo ebay to pricey but effective). I've had a gander at a few of the posts on here, I don't want to hack the ECU or steal PSA's industrial secrets, just basic "this is broke, go buy a new one" with a button that clears the fault type of deal. Any advice?? In advance I thank you.

The only thing that is know to work for everybody is Lexia/PP2000. Not so pricey on eBay these days and almost certain to pay for itself several times over,

I have the same engine temp false alarm at the moment, 99% sure it's an intermittent coolant temp sensor, so I've bought another one but not fitted it yet.

Lexia/PP2000 it shall be then. Very Rrrreasonable on flea bay I see. Will have to dust off my XP disc and fire up the old laptop.
