Key programming....

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Key programming....

Post by jaisunny »

Hi guys, New here.

My friend has a 1998 406 and together we've bought PP2000. He wants to program new key fobs to his car as he only has one. He has a 4 digit code which i believe is the security code for the car. And has a used fob (i think that'll be ok on this car).

We're just looking at guides on how to do it properly with PP2000 but all we can find are guides for 307's..etc which on PP2000 the menu layouts are completely different.

Im led to believe i must go to:

1-TEST BY ECU
2- PROTECT THE VEHICLE
3- ???

This is where we're too scared to proceed any further.

Surely there's a guide/tutorial flying about somewhere?

Hi and welcome aboard. 8)

Unfortunately it's not just 307's that appear different on PP2K, 406's of different ages present data in different ways.

I've done this before, but not for some time and only with post-2002 diesels.
As far as I can remember it's a BSI function, found in configuration settings and termed something like "Learning of Keys"

HTH, but your car could be completely different.

Good Luck, let us know how you get on.

2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Hi & welcome,

Yes, you get different screens and options on different models, and even on the same model from different years. That's why it asks you for the build code when it starts up -- so that it can configure the screens.
So, basically, you never know what's what and you have to work through the screens systematically until you find what you're after.

For keys "replacement parts" rings a bell.

I have done one before some years ago, and it just walked you through putting the key in the ignition and entering the four digit code.

I'm in the same situation with my 407 but haven't plucked up courage to do it yet as one iffy key is better than the possibility of zero keys.

Doesn't the ID46 chip have to be virgin? I.e., I thought that second hand keys can't work.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Just to add, when you get to the reprogramming keys menu, you need to do all your keys together - new and old - as the car is programmed to the keys, not the key to the car....
