406 central locking problem

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

406 central locking problem

Post by PeterN »

My wife's estate has been off the road for a few weeks but we went out in it yesterday and all was fine until we tried to lock it, it locks and then immediately unlocks again both with the remote and the key, as if a door isn't shut properly.

I know this seems to be a common fault but its not one I have had before so don't really know where to look, I suspect its a switch on one of the doors but where do I start? I have a PP2000 but cant get it to talk to either of the 406's, in fact I have two Lexias but get the same result with the other one, if any one could help with that as well I would be obliged.

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter,

It's usually a door not shut properly, failing that the most likely culprit is the switch inside one of the door locks.
Finding out which one can be tricky, but look for clues:
- does your MFD indicate a door open?
- do the interior lights stay on when you close one of the doors?
- do they behave differently if you 'close' them by operating the latch mechanism with a screwdriver?
- Can you hear / feel all of the lock motors operating, is one different to the others?

Thanks for the reply. the door indicator shows them all shut and the internal light goes out. I will check by listen or feel if all the motors are working, my initial impression from the sound is that they were.

What if you fired in some WD40 into the door latch, the key hole, anywhere to do with the latch and handle mechanisms?

Fair point duke, WD doesn't actually last very long does it?

I have used this to unstick the locks in the past and its worked very well but I have never had the central locking fail before.

Just thought I would post the outcome and thank those that offered help.

Lubrication of the external locks was just what was needed, I sprayed some silicone lubricant in first as its very thin so will creep, I followed this with engine oil and worked the locks, they were indeed very stuck as the never normally get used, so all is now well. 8)
