Trip computer switch broken: looking for any suggestions

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Trip computer switch broken: looking for any suggestions

Post by Vincintosh »

Hello, I own a 2004 Peugeot 406 Coupé 2.2 HDi. In the last couple of days I've noticed the trip computer switch/button (the one on the wiper stalk, just to be more clear) has started to behave a little weird, since I sometimes had to push it a little too hard or a couple of times in order for it to change the information shown on the center console MFD. Unfortunately this morning it eventually stopped working and if I push it nothing happens, so the display is now stuck showing my average speed. Since I'm afraid I'll have to change the whole stalk "harness", I was looking for a cheaper and easier solution. My idea was to re-wire it by locating its wires and using a momentary switch placed somewhere else. So I unscrewed and dismounted that plastic thing that covers the steering wheel and took a look behind it, but (as I was expecting) there is no easy wiring (hopefully the signal from the switch is not coming to the MFD by the CAN network).

Now, I was looking for some help and found this forum, I hope someone around here knows something more about the wiring scheme or the MFD connector pinout (maybe you can find the two wires coming from the switch on the connector).

Hi, welcome to the club

The button on the end of the stalk can be swapped over, the contact inside wears out. The big piece behind the steering wheel on cars later than 2000 are called Comms units, which is a single unit that all 4 stalks connect to ( indicators, wipers, cruise control and stereo ) This unit can be swapped over from another Coupe, as long as it has the ESP function, or the unit can be removed and sent off for repair - about £30.

There was a recent thread about this on the Coupe forum ( http://www.406coupeclub.org ) with a fellow member with exactly the same issue - there were pictures and everything.. 8) It's worth signing up there too for more specific Coupe information ( mainly bodywork and the more popular V6 engine )

Plenty of us here have 2.2hdi in our non Coupes so both forums can help out engine wise...

Good luck with the fix.
2003 2.2hdi estate - mine

Hello, thanks a lot for your help. Sure I'm gonna register on the other forum. Can you just give me some suggestions on how to find that thread you're talking about? Maybe you remember some keysords or the user's name... I couldn't find it!
