A couple of weeks ago the 'key in ignition/lights on buzzer' on my 2001 406 hdi 90 stopped working... wasn't bothered as it can be a pain in the neck!
Last Saturday I realised that the audible indicator, (the clicker) on my indicators had stopped working, even though both the hazards and indicators currently work as intended.
The stalk is fine, still in as new condition and works in all functions without any problem, so I assume the can (flasher unit) is on its way out.
Got a new flasher unit from the suppliers... standard three pin plug in unit.
Nothing in the Haynes Workshop Manual for guidance, so the steering cowl, the dash (down to display unit,) both dash end caps, inboard fuse area, have all been out.
No sign of the pigging unit no matter where I have looked!
It was far easier 40 odd years ago, most cars then had the flasher can mounted on the bulkhead! (And yes I've even had a shufti there too!)
So does anyone know the location of the flasher unit... and please no references to dimly lit parks and long macs...! lol.

Hi & welcome aboard.
I don't think you have a 'flasher unit' as such - the relays are part of the BSI, (Body System Interface), buried behind the passenger fusebox.
The audible clicking, (certainly on late 2001-on cars), comes from a small speaker inside the COMM2000 unit - the lump below the steering wheel all the stalks go into.

2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Re: 2001 406 hdi 90 Flasher unit location?
Hi there, welcome!
I'm afraid your car is right on the cusp of the transition between the earlier semi-(some)-mux and later full-(more)-mux cars, if it's early then there is a relay but the wiring diagrams aren't showing where it is, looks like it's under the dash by the fuse panel in the parts diagrams anyway.
If it's later then it's part of the com2000 steering column unit and you're in for a world of pain I'm afraid. I guess it's more likely given the symptoms. They're breath-takingly expensive to replace but there are bods on ebay that fix them for a price. Tbh that's a pretty unusual issue, usually the stalks go limp. Or the buttons stop working.

Re: 2001 406 hdi 90 Flasher unit location?
Hi Doggy and Steve,
Thank you both for welcoming me to the site and for each of your valued responses.
I bought my 406 in October 2013, and it has given me excellent service, often surprising me with it's reliability, economy, comfort and turn of speed.
The car was first registered on 14.09.2001 so as you explained Steve was probably on the cusp of transition between earlier and later models.
I'll have another delve under the dash later today, to see if there is a flasher unit mounted near the fuse panel, and if so, will simply replace the unit with the one ordered, which was done by using the cars registration number.
If it proves that there is not one there, then the relay will indeed be in the BSI, so after due thought, seeing as everything is working just as it should at the moment, that is apart from having no audible notification of the operation of the flashers, rather than go to the expense of renewing those parts like the COMM 2000, which at present would appear to be fine, I'll simply introduce an in line buzzer to the system and see how that works.
At least then, if the flasher system should go down, I'll have some idea of what to look at replacing, but at the moment, it is going to be a case of, 'if it ain't broke don't fix it!'
I'll let you know how matters proceed... Cheers again lads for the information, well appreciated!

Re: 2001 406 hdi 90 Flasher unit location?
Just to add further to the confusion...!
Didn't need to use it, so I've left the car standing for a week, then the buzzer unit I'd ordered arrived in the post and I went out to take a look at matters.
Usual ignition on, started the motor, moved the indicator stalk... 'click click click...' systems working again!
The sound of the clicker is definitely located in the steering column in the COMM 2000, and as everything appears to be working as it should again at present, I've put the buzzer kit away until it might be required.
Thanks again lads for the guidance and advice... Happy motoring!
