The blower on my heater has stopped working. I read that the ignition switch can cause problems like this so after checking fuses which were all ok I wiggled the steering column while the engine was running and the fan worked properly.
Instead of stripping out for switch has anybody bypassed the switch to fix this problem?

I'm not sure its that simple - although I'm no mechanic.
The blower only works when the engine is running, so the 'engine running' relay needs the feed from the ignition first - before off to the blower.
A new ignition lead is around £20 from eBay - I changed the one on my wife's Picasso and it took about 30 mins - as the new lead was an inch shorter so had to faff about rerouting it a bit.
Its been fine ever since though - this was nearly 18 months ago..

I has the opposite problem - mine runs constantly at full speed as soon as you start the engine.
After searching previous posts, I'm 99% sure it's going to be the speed control module, on which at least one intrepid pioneer replaced the power transistor that does the PWM switching. Nowadays grabbing one from the scrappy is going to be cheaper/easier than changing the transistor, (particularly for a blind old ham-fisted solderer).
Since the loss of the Photobucket pics, can anyone remind me whether this module is mounted on the fan itself, or nearby in the footwell?

I think they're on the blower motor. The pictures should still be available, you just need to find the links for them and view them on Bloatedfucker itself.

Quick update - fleabay delivery arrived Saturday, fitted it yesterday and all's good. 
Definitely worth £9.99 to sort that out painlessly - involved a bit of footwell acrobatics.
Tip - remove the gadget from the heater 1st, then undo the plugs.
Reckon mine had been changed before - it was an OE Valeo item, but only 1 of the 2 screws was fitted and that was loose.
I made do with the 1 accessible fixing screw, but at least it's tight.
