Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

No you can't just pull the lighter out 'cos it's got a bulb holder attached, so it won't fit through the hole. However if you pull out the ashtray surround panel and lift the gear stick gator you can reach in and get the plug off the back of the lighter socket. It's a bit fiddly 'cos it's one of those ones that has a over engineered clip! and mine only had about a cm free play in the wire  . I spliced it to permanently fit a 4 lighter socket adaptor for all me gadgets  .

Also if you undo 4 screws yo can lift the whole centre console a bit to give better access, 2 under the ash tray, one one either side right at the back (move the front seats forward to see them).

Ok kit has been fitted.

I spliced the wires on the cigarette lighter (after spending ages getting the clip off) and wired the power wires into it.

Kit works as it should and it appears to go off after a short period of time when the engine is off. Success.

However, does the cig lighter draw power all the time from the battery even when parked with the engine off? If so I am afraid of draining the battery, and I have only just thought of this after installing it.

Also the volume level on the stereo has gone down slightly and I get large crackling noises occasionally, but I am sure this is down to not connecting the mute wire yet.

I have looked through the 406 manual and the Haynes manual at the wiring diagram and cannot find the mute wire, any ideas?

Other than that an almost good job! Will post photo's later.

i think the cigarette lighter is permenantly fed so it will drain the battery
check page 49 of your owners hand book, you see it says wiring position A1 is a spare, my D8 owners manual says thats the handsfree kit mute, as it says do not use A2 to A4, dont, they are the BSi communication lines and multifunction display communication lines, i would like to point out i remove myself from all liability of damage that may be caused to your radio and / or any other electrics related or not from trying to wire in the mute function

Ok the kit turns itself on automatically when I use the remote control central locking. It then turns itself off a few minutes after locking the car, which I think is really clever considering it doesn't say anything about that in the manual, or myself wiring it in that way.

I will leave the car overnight and see if it drains the battery, and if so will re-charge it. Seems the only way to test it.

James, will look again at the wiring and fuses tomorrow.

IIRC the fuse for the fag lighter can go in 2 positions. One permanent live, the other ignition live. Mine is on ignition live.

Well here the pics, it is working. Completely forgot about checking out the mute switch today as I was too busy cleaning the car....Doh!

Anyway looks pretty smart...

Also I went and bought a mobile phone holder. I have been looking for a decent one for ages, but wasn't sure which one to get. Wanted one that would compliment the executive look of the car so went for this one, £15 from Halfrauds (a bit expensive but it was exactly what I was looking for!)

Put some shoes on man!

The fuse position has 3 slots, so you put the fuse in with one blade in the middle slot and the other in either of the outer slots. If you're on pernanent live just move the fuse to the only other place it'll go and job's a good 'un.
