Should the 12v socket be illuminated?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Should the 12v socket be illuminated?

Post by Welly »

I have noticed (dark nights) that my 12v socket, or Cigar Lighter, does not illuminate even though I thought it should have an orange 'ring' around it.

If it should light up, can it be fixed with a new bulb? and how do you get the thing out?

Oh oh i wanna answer this one!!

YES.

I only know this because when removing my phone charger the other night the light went out... now it doesnt come on at all and the power isnt getting to it. dodgy connection me thinks.

The light should come on with the headlights.

No idea on how to get it out though.

I wrote a nice little HOWTO on removing the cigarette lighter socket... guess it got lost in the forum hacking :(

Basically:

lever out the ashtray
unclip the gearstick gaiter and pull it over the stick
put it in 3rd
reach under the socket and disconnect the 2 connectors (one 2-pin for power, one 1-pin spade for light)
rotate the metal bit of the socket anticlockwise then pull it up through the orange plastic bit
you can then get at the bulb
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
