Horn fault

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Horn fault

Post by MJoshi »

Hello,

The horn buttons on my Peugeot 406 started to become intermittent over time and now the horn does not sound at all.

Is the problem likely to be with the switches or further down in the relay/horn connections?

How easy is it to remove the steering wheel to inspect the horn contacts on this car?

Are any special tools required?

Thanks.

I take it your horn is on the steering wheel and not a push button on the end of the indicator stalk?
If that's the case I've got a horrible feeling it'll be a D9 with multiplex; what year is it?

Thanks for your reply teamster1975.

It's a 2002 model and has the horn buttons behind the steering wheel.

Yep, it's multiplex :(
If you can figure out which contacts on the slip ring go to the horn buttons you could measure the resistance with a meter to make sure they are switching; also give the slip ring contacts a good clean & regrease; failing that it could be the brain :(
There are loads of clued up people here, I'm sure they can offer advice too :)

Stay away from the airbag feeds with your meter - some of them only need milivolts to fire!

I had a look at the 406 Haynes manual but still cannot work out how to remove the steering wheel cover?

There don't appear to be any holes behind the steering wheel to detach the front cover and it doesn't prise off with a flat screwdriver?

I know that after the cover has been removed, there is a small hole underneath the steering wheel to poke a screwdriver to detach the airbag.

99% sure it will want a squib. its the part that goes behind the steering wheel. they only fit one way and can be troublesome.
if in doubt speak to a autoelectrician.

Hiya mate, are you aware that you can press the centre of the wheel anywhere to make the horn work. Mine's a bit tempremental if I try to press the edge bits with a thumb, but a full palm applied right to the lion and it works every time

:) Had the same symptoms with my 2.2 Hdi GTX. Took the advice of boys on this site and kept away from the steering wheel. Instead went for the simpler cheaper option of cleaning up the contacts on the actual horn(s). They are located behind the front bumper below the lights and accessed by going in through the bottom end of the wheelarch covers (you may have to loosen off a bottom cover as well). Horn works ok now, not perfect but good enough. 8)
