Rear Fog lights on D8 (N Reg)

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Rear Fog lights on D8 (N Reg)

Post by michaeljclark »

The 406 is off for an MOT on Tuesday (along with a service and to sort out the knocking rear suspension)

I decided to clean the car (as it's been a while) and in the process decided to check all my lights

The Near side fog light didn't work, so I changed it for a spare. Which also didn't work :| (I even used my trusty multi meter  the bulbs were fine)

So I pulled both the rear clusters out of the car and fronm what I can see the near side cluster is missing a wire that by the looks of things powers the electrical track that the fog lights sits on.

Now in the days before the 406oc was hacked, I'm sure that a 406 estate owner (DaiRees?!?) posed a similar question and then one he'd got his answer proceeded to wire the non working fog light up.

Any way - am I right - isn't the near side one hooked up? And if not why on earth bother putting a bulb in?!?!

Cheers

Morning....

See i have made a lasting impression

Right, modern cars usually only have foglight, In the UK it's the off side that's required so the near side is left out. But I like symmetry :cheesy: , so one day I set about getting the other one working. I was happy to discover that the bulb socket was already wired up, stuck a bulb in and tested it and it worked, hoorah!. Went to put the bulb holder back into the back of the cluster and it wouldn't go :frown: . They actually mould the back plate of the cluster with the hole too small, so you physically cant fit the bulb in there! Malicious bastards! 2 mins with the dremmel solved it though... :cheesy:

So now I have a very rare 406 estate with 2 rear fogs..... 8)

Sounds like on the D8 it'll accept the bulb but it isn't wired up, should be easy enough to sort that out though.... :? Have fun.

 Any chance on a rerun of your guide to hooking it up - I guess a nice thick bit of wire (which I think even I can do) jammed in to the socket (I doubt I'll be able to get the spade connector that goes into the terminal block mind) that runs back to the offside (working fog) and is some how spliced in ?!?!?!?

Cheers

Never did that job myself, but I'd guess the earth is there so you just need to get power accross from the other side. I might get flamed for this, but if you're worried about splicing it just use a nice chunky scotchlock :?

So would this explain why when I looked at replacing one of my side lights on my saloon, there was no bulb in the left hand cluster for the fog lights?

Both of mine work :cheesy: What a stupid piece of cost-cutting though, I hate having a lense on my car that does nothing. Worse are 4x4s with two sets of tail lights, one of which doesn't work. Ok, you don't actually need both but it still looks pretty stupid.

Most Japanese cars don't even have the lense for a near-side fog lamp. Ah well, I don't suppose it really matters (unless you drive abroad...)
