Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Airbag fault !!! Help!

Post by skspawn »

I own a Peugeot 406 2.0 Hdi 90 hp year 2002 and 3 months ago the airbag light apeared for no reason, i`ve tried everything, wires under the seat and many other things nothing works. The car has not been implicated in any accident ever that`s why this is so confusing. I`m from romania (sorry about the spelling), and i also went with the car at the service but the service technicians here, are ass holes and all they think about is making more money.
If there`s anyone who can give me any advice concerning the problem i will be very thanksfull.

I had the same fault on my Audi and it was the connector under the seat, I took it apart and cleaned it with some electrical contact cleaner and it has been fine ever since, worth a try.

Hi there. The connectors under the seat are the most common place but, if you already checked them, then the problem could be many things. The ecu broke on my D8 and the airbag light flashed so I took my car to Peugeot and all they did was try a new ecu, not much thinking necessary. What did your "wonderful" technicians say was the problem?

The "wonderfull" technicians said the problem would be solved by replacing the light block (i don`t know if this is the correct therm in english) behind the steering wheel and it`s only 500 euros  but i know they are bluffing so they can get more cash out of me.
Another suspicion i have is a cable that connects the airbag inside the steering wheel but i`m afraid to take a look, what if the airbag blows up in my face
It would have been helpfull to have a service manual :D, does anyone have one?

Anyway, an odd thing happened tonight when i was leaving work, i started the car and the airbag light remained off for aprox. 10 minutes when it appeared again :( . That makes me think about cleaning the contacts under the seat with contacts cleaner spray and see what happens :D I hope it will eventually work.
Anyway, I want to thank you all for informations.

My airbag light keeps doing this :x

I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting all the stuff under the seat including the one at the back. I was going to start a new post recently about which wire exactly is the offender? I tried making the 'Pre Tens' orange wire a bit of a tighter fit by bending the contact slightly but it hasn't worked.

My wife has been using the car alot and the airbag light comes on when you change the seat position.

This is a very annoying (and common) problem here and it would be nice to find the right fix. One thing that puzzles me is whether or not the airbag would work in a crash if the light was flasing immediately beforehand?

I`ve cleaned the contacts under the seat with contacts cleaner spray and nothing. I found three contacts (located in front of the seat), does anyone know if there are other contacts except these three?

I've done a bit of googling on this issue and it appears that the only reliable fix is to cut out each connector under the seat in turn and solder the wires together then insulate them separately.

One thing I didn't appreciate was that the pretens/airbag detonator capacitors hold a charge (as capacitors like to) and it is recommended to disconnect the battery for at least 30mins before doing ANYTHING. This might explain why simply unplugging and replugging the connector doesn't work? maybe we should leave it unplugged a while?

I know on the Audi if the airbag light is on then the whole system is disabled. I have a copy of vag com so I can clear the fault code and reset the airbag light. Mine was the same whenever you moved the seat then the bloody thing would light up.

It may be one of the wires by the connector that has half broken, would explain why cutting and soldering fixes it, I would go for it you have nothing to lose.

i had the problem on my old d8 so i just cut out the connectors and never had a problem since, dont go near airbags or tensioners with a multimeter, and yes they do have capacitors, ive never had one go off on me, ive set an old one off before though
as for the light, if it flashes, you have airbags, but no tensioners, if it flashes for about 5 secs then stays on, no passanger airbag, if its on permenatley no airbags at all, if the bulb doesnt come on, i.e. blown or removed, you have no airbags

Does this apply to D9 side airbag?
My side airbag light started playing up,then for no reason it worked properly for about 2 weeks, now it's on again?
I turn ignition on, the light comes on for a few seconds & goes off again.
It then sometimes comes on again when it feels like it, but once on wont go off again till I turn ignition off.

I've had "airbag defective" and the light on for a while now. Intermittent at first, but permanent since xmas. I tried messing around with cleaning connectors briefly, but time has since been against me and I've ended up getting used to ignoring the message. hing is there's WAY too many cables un der the electric seats to go replacing connectors.

I'd be eternally grateful if someone can give a straight forward answer to how to sort this on a D9.

And if they can answer that they've sorted it on a D9 Coupe SE, they can have my wife for a night
