Trip Computer Retrofit?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Trip Computer Retrofit?

Post by gizmodrake »

Hey guy's

I have just bought my first 406. It's a 97 2.0 petrol GLX and I would like to get the trip computer working, do I just have to find a wiper stalk with the button on it or is it a bit more involved?

If anyone knows where to find a tutorial or point me in the right direction that would be great!

Thanks in advance......

All your answers are in this thread :)
It's a very worthwhile project, you're lucky cos you've got the GLX and already have the screen!
As you say, change the wiper stalk and follow the instructions in the above link. Several of us have done it :cheesy:

Just to let you know; you'll need to get an additional connector for the back of the display; it's exactly the same as the existing one. Pop to a breakers if you've got one local and chop one off from behind the display or if you find an LX there is a cubby hole which blocks the gap with the connector clipped into it. You have to trim a couple of lugs off and the two will slot together to form one plug.

Neither connector nor button are necessary - my first retro-fit involved rigging a DB9 connector to the back of the display and a matching one on the loom I made, and a button blu-tac'd to the dashboard.

The hardest part is establishing which wire to cut on the ECU loom

Of course you could do that, but why go to the trouble if you can source another connector and stalk? :P

Thanks for the advice guy's! Well I wired it all up today using the wiring diagrams in the thread you pointed me to but I have not yet been able to get a stalk so I just have a push button dangling out of the dash at the moment! Unfortunately It does not yet work, I do not get anything come up on the lower half of the display, think I must have missed something! I have the wire off the ECU connected and all the wires off the instrument panel but to no avail. One thing I did notice is pin 15 on my instrument panel has no wire going to it on one plug and on the other plug pin 15 goes to a wire with a different number, methinks I may need to take it apart again and have another look! Oh and 1368 on my car was a definite yellow not beige!

Cheers

I forgot to say; did you adjust the rotary switch on the side of the screen? I can't remember which number it should be on but only one position will allow the push button to work and switch the trip functions  I think it was 2

Aye, that'll be the switch needing turning. Note you should unplug and re-plug the display after changing the switch position else it can do strange things

WRT the switch, the stalk's actually a lot more work than a simple switch and some blu-tac. I broke my lower steering wheel surround last time i did it. Stupid weak plastic :(

Actually you're right; I forgot you have to add two additional pins to the wiper stalk plug for the trip switch lines
With me it was a case of having a local breaker filled with 406's so I was laughing really. :cheesy:

And you thought right! The switch is now set to position 2 and I now have a working trip computer with all the trimmings, thanks for your advice guy's I'm dead chuffed :P
