Dash Bulbs

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Dash Bulbs

Post by superdooper »

Hi all,

Picked up my D8 today :D

I have noticed that the display where the temp/radio display is it needs a bulb as its hard to see. It looks easy enough to do, but thought i would see if it is/what bulbs are needed?

Also, the mileage display is dim when the lights arnt turnt on but is fine when the lights are on. Does that mean there are 2 bulbs on that display and one isnt functioning?

Thanks!

Flat screwdriver either side, lever it out and the bulb holders are on the top. It's the diddy little capless bulbs you can get from Maplins/Halfrauds/etc

Just pop the thing out of the holder and go into the shop with it :)

That's odd, but I'm guessing it's actually the bulbs behind the odo that have gone, and when you put the lights on what you're seeing is light leaking in from other parts of the dash. If you use the brightness adjuster (next to your right knee) and the odometer gets brighter/darker, then this is the case.

Same bulbs, but not so easy to access. Pull the steering wheel out and drop it low. 3 torx screws at the top of the instrument cluster surround, then CAREFULLY pull the surround out being careful to keep the vent stuff with the surround - the vent bits come back about 3-4". Might help to open the drivers door and pop off the little plastic cover. Once the surround's off, there's 4 torx screws holding the instrument cluster in place. Be careful not to lose the screws!
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

You are right, it isnt super bright but it does dim with the rest of the clocks which isnt right. Are they the same bulbs? Would rather not have to take the dash apart twice (once to check and then to fit after trip to halfrauds!)

Cheers mjb :D

Yep, same bulbs. You can rip the multifunction display out, grab one of the bulbs, put the display half way back in the hole to save levering it again and go to halfrauds with that one in your hand. The bulb holders behind the dash may be different colours, but its the same bulbs. I've probably replaced dozens of the sods now :)
