Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

HELP! Newbie with Fault Code Problem

Post by sna400 »

HELP ME - I am at my wits end. I have a 1997 2.0 Saloon with the XU10 engine and the engine service light keeps on flashing when the ignition is put on. I know that if it flashes once, the car will not start - Twice and the car will start, but keep on stalling / not tick over properly - Three times and it will run fine (apart from the throttle delay - but thats another story!).
To help me find out the problem I bought a fault code reader (U280) with a 16 pin connector - but can't find the interface on the car! The reader is ODB II compliant (and yes I know the car may not be.....NOW, after I bought it!) Is there an interface for this car and can I use the reader on it? If not can someone point me in the right direction where I can get a reader and / or interface for this.

Help oh Knowledgeable ones!!

Welcome Simon! :D
Is your car the 2 litre 16v or 2 litre 8v turbo?
The diag socket is next to the fuse panel behind the immob keypad. You won't find a reader that can connect to it but you can read off the codes with a test lamp.
Take a look here for a way to access these.

Thanks Teamster - I'll try the flashing (oops - you meant lights!)

The engine is the 16v - I think if it had been the turbo I would have given up months ago!

Cheers
