Key jammed in ignition barrel!!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Key jammed in ignition barrel!!

Post by nutski »

Been having a few problems with my blowers for the last week, not powering everytime i start the car, but then would come on with a wiggle of the key, was at work this afternoon and got in my car to head back to main office and blowers wouldn't work suprisingly so I gave the key a good wiggle as per usual and i had heat! Got back to the office and i couldn't turn of my car, key was jammed solid and no amount of wiggling key would free it, left work and pegged it to Peugeot who agreed i needed a new barrel.

Now for the prices.....

1. £165 for a replacement barrel which is matched for my key, 7-10 days for it to arrive.
2. £230 for a lockset with barrel fitted, keys coded, would need to use old key on door locks and glove box.
3. £360 for a lockset with everything fitted, so would only need the new key.

Went for option 2 as i said i wanted to take away the door/glovebox locks from the lockset and fit them myself as I didn't want to waste £130 on letting them do it!

Should be done tomorrow and can pick my car up in the afternoon hopefully.

I have only been to the main dealer once before after i replaced my MFD and needed updating as it didn't recognize my CD changer, now I remember why

I'm not working today, so, I had a look in my odds and sods box this morning....I was convinced I had one of these ignition barrels from a job I did a couple of years back...

I have a brand new one, without a key, I don't know what model it came off, maybe someone experienced with these barrels can tell me.

It is Valeo, has a chrome end where the key fits and has three wiring connectors.....all large spade type.....

One is brown, with two thick red wires.

One is black, with thick red and blue wire.

One is grey, with an orange and a yellow wire.

The whole barrel assembly is about four inches long, the longest wire is about a foot long.

Hi guys, duno how handy this is but i was browsing through ebay and seen this ignition barrel and lock set, and remembered reading this post. Seems to be everything you would need to change the keys, and is a gud bit cheaper than the stealers. Then again it could be a challenge fitting it. anyway heres a link for it :arrowd:

I think that kind of answers Jasper's question anyway.

Yeah, it answers it to a point, the wiring part of the switch is identical, the one I have is a complete unit, I'll have another look at it later.

Useful picture, thanks.
