D9 Trip computer retro fit - another one!!!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

D9 Trip computer retro fit - another one!!!

Post by djheath »

Following on from Eoin27s Retro Fitting a trip computer in his D9, I thought to myself "that sounds easy", so thought I would have a go myself.

I bought a new wiper stalk cheaply off ebay with the trip button on the end. I swapped it over and pressed the button. Nothing happened. Eoin27 said he at least got his to go through the menus when he pressed the stalk, even before getting the BSI reprogrammed.
My display is the Multifunction display "B" which in my manual says it is the type which has a trip computer. Model codes on the unit say:
Sagem Ecram Multifunction B

So questions are as follows:

1. Are all D9's the same? - i.e. I thought all D9's are multiplexed with a BSI.
2. If question one is not true, then how do I know my D9 is multiplexed or not and does this mean anything with regards to getting the comp working.
3. Can I get the trip computer to work? - On investigation the new wiper stalk had two extra connection pins compared to my old one, but there weren't any corresponding wires in the wiper connector loom which connected to these pins. The connector on the back of the multifunction display had some pins with no wires to join them from the black connector block. I assume I need to run some wires from the stalk to the display - does anyone know which ones?
4. Anything else I could be missing - i.e. will my car have all the sensors for the computer? - it already displays the outside temperature?

Car is a very early D9 - V reg 1999 1.8i 16v petrol XU7JP4 engine.

Any information would be really helpful to get this feature working if I can.

Many thanks.

Thats a shame it doesn't work. Can you post up the item that you bought on ebay?

Can you take a photo of the connector to the stalk in your car and post it up?

And just to clear things up, can you take a pic of your display. Hopefully, we can sort this out.

Mine is also a V-Reg 99-model D9 with 1.8i, though I thought all D9 models got the EW7J4 engine.

I seem to recall someone here saying the multiplexed 406s didn't start showing up til 2001/2002, though I can't remember who said that

At any rate, if you do get yours working, please let me know as I think it'd be a really nice little add-on for my 406.

Cool! I like you optimism! I will take a pick. The stalk I bought said it was from a 1.8, W reg car so I was hoping it would just work. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0370946657 There were some cheaper ones, but I thought the closest match would be the best bet.

If the car isn't multiplexed then I suppose that could be a bonus. It means I could possible just link up a few wires from the switch to the display unit and fingers crossed away I go. It almost feels that this year of car is a kind of cross over from the D8 to the D9s. I bit complicated, but not so complicated you can't hack it about! :D

I will get the pics sorted when I get a chance to take it all apart again. Thank goodness it's quite simple.

Regards.

David.

I wouldn't go at the wires just yet. As far as i can tell, my 2000 406 isn't multiplexed and i didn't touch any wires. I'm sure your one has a BSI like mine though. It is possible that the stalk can be faulty and this seems more like something you should adresss before pulling at wires. anyway, put up the pics and i'll compare the connections with my 6

Don't worry I wont start cutting/adding anything just yet.

I have had a look on service box with my VIN and this shows a MUX control box being available, but it also shows two types of wiper stalk available - one "without mux" which looks just like what I have, and one "with mux" which is a big control unit for the indicators/wipers which looks nothing like mine.

All very intriguing.

Despite not being multiplexed, early D9s like yours pass all the controls through the BSI so adding wiring to the control systems carries an EXTREMELY high risk of damaging the BSI making the car unusable without a hefty repair bill.
