Hiya Steve, welcome to the site...
That's a fairly common fault I'm afraid, there's loads of info on here about about it. Use the search box at the top right of the page

Re: cabin blower
The blower on yours is behind the insulation directly above the front passenger footwell - yes effectively behind the glovebox I s'pose...
1/ Check that the wires/spades/terminals to the fan motor haven't burnt. The fan motor draws a fair old current especially on max blow and if the connectors are loose or dirty then they'll drop a volt or two, develop a few watts across 'em and burn/melt.
2/ After that visual inspection, a pound to a pinch of the proverbial you've got a blown fan speed controller which, on D9's IIRC, is mounted on the fan motor. Pug call it a digital resistor, not a favoured piece of terminology to my mind but there you go. Mine blew in Jan 08, replaced and been OK for the last 40 odd thou miles of taxiing.
As Dai said, there's a thread or two on here on this subject so a forum search will net you plenty of gen. Pug's servicebox online will get you the part number and retail price. Again a forum search will help you here.
Why do we keep harping on about the forum search? Cos it's not efficient or productive or much fun for volunteer peeps to keep copying/pasteing/typing the same old stuff when the answers are already there...
Good luck.

52 HDI(90) 406 saloon. Sadly no longer owned, bless her she got near 200,000 miles and I had to sell her on, she was still going strong.

Guessing with it being a HDi (and likely a multiplexed D9) it'll be the controller... To test if it's the motor, take it out, look for big thick black and red wires coming out of the motor and going into the controller, and throw 9-12v at it to see if it spins.
A charred red wire going into the motor is a sign you should be looking for a new motor

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

HI,
On my D9 , I havent had this problem as yet but I managed to source a 2nd hand one off ebay for a quid!
For the record, on early d8 models I went through about four (To be fair the car did do a lot of miles with the fan running for 60 odd hours a week fro 5 years......) of these on the airconned D8 which has 2 dimples on the resistor block.
On non-airconned models they only have one dimple.
Also if you come across a late 405 model with air-con its exactly the same item as a D8 406 and the same with the non airconned cars but these only come from the run out models i.e. M reg onwards which used 406 balljoints too!
I know it sounds a bit crazy but theyre considered service items in the taxi trade!
