my fun job of re wiring bit of interior loom with new plugs

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

my fun job of re wiring bit of interior loom with new plugs

Post by jameslunt »

I have noticed for a couple of weeks now that my d9 estate has been letting in water onto the drivers footwell rubber mat, havent had time to look at it due to work.

well anyway to cut a long story short i lent the car to a friend to return a car transporter trailer for me and got a txt saying that my car thought the door was open, then it swapped which door it thought was open... then it flashed that a couple of doors were open then speedo cut out whch it has done a couple of times before. then went into anti polution fault for a min so mate pulled over and looked and the carpet under the mat was swimming!!!

Managed to get the carpet out of the car this morn to be greeted with 2" of water and alot more soaked up in the foam of the carpet and 3 multi plugs corroded and a couple of wires broken due to water ingress and rotting in the water... no wander my car has been doing funny things!!

so went off to the scrap yard and got the multi plugs from 2 d9's one saloon and one coupe and have had to make the car a set of new plugs up using 2 sets of plus so each had the right number of pins and roughtly the right colour wires i nthe right places!

the in its self was a pain to do as taking the pins out of the plugs is fiddly, but the worst bit is having to cut each wire one at a time and solder and heat shrink each one and there is about 100 wires (im not joking either!) between each side of the 3 multi plugs!!!

anyone else had to do this as im only half way through doing it but fed up of it and not looking forward to the rest of the job in the morn!

lets hope this cures at least some of the faults!

Impressive! I hate soldering wires together so attempting a job like that... mucho respect!
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Try a 4,800 pair joint. I'd have just pieced them out and left the plugs out, no more water problems...

yep thats how i made up replacement multiplugs out of 2 sets i got from the scrap yard as the plugs i got didnt have enough contacts in them to work in my car.

i couldnt do this and use the existing wiring tho as the contacts had corroded and broken along with alot of the wires broken off at the multiplugs.

4800 pair is way beyond my concentration level!

the job is done but i think the BSI or alarm module has water ingress as the car still isnt perfect but its better than it was!!!!
