(Newbie) Problem with the wipers!!!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

(Newbie) Problem with the wipers!!!

Post by petecolli »

Hi all i've just bought myself a 406 2.0L estate W reg a few days ago and a few problems have come to light!
1.First of all is the low brake fluid when the handbrake is on i,ve read a few posts and its seems to point to the handbrake switch so i've ordered one (will do that at the weekend)
2. Back windows wont open from the back will only open from the front, tried the lock button several times in differant positions but no joy!
3.And this is the worse one of all! the wipers are a nightmare!!! they go for about 8 or 9 swipes and then just stop anyware it dosn't mater wich position i push the stalk to it dose the same even on the fastest one.so driving to workand back today in the rain i had to flick the stalk up and down up and down the whole way there and back it done my head in!!!! could this be just the motor on its way out or could it be something else :!: also the auto wipe don't work.
Any help will be great.
Thanks

Hi & welcome, I had a similar problem with the rear windows on mine when I first got it, just took the switch panel out of the drivers door & gave the underneath a good clean & hoover then wafted some WD40 over anything that looked electrical.
Problem solved, rear windows work & lock button now operates correctly. Cant help with the wipers though sorry.
Good luck.

I'd get another wiper stalk and motor from the scappies and try them first. My initial thoughts would be the stalk, as there's only that, the motor or a relay which could be at fault really.

I think we had a similar wiper problem on here before, 'twas the motor (park position sensor??) IIRC. Then again I may have just imagined the whole thing...

Try a search mate

Handbrake switch - fairly common, you've sussed that already, bit of a pain to fit though.

Wipers - sounds like the motor itself if it's 'parking' all over the place :?

Windows - mine did this at first and I just worked that switch on the drivers door like a mad man on/off several times and it sprang into life!! (people leave then in the 'locked' or 'off' position for years and they stick).

Good luck and welcome too :cheesy:

The handbrake switch isn't that difficult, follow the process towards the bottom of page 4 on the attached link viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4852&start=45.

Well did my wiper motor this morning. But there still the same just parking anyware they want. :x so ether the motor i bought off ebay is also knackerd or its somthing eles :!:

Got my electric mirrors working :) the wirers had been put in the wrong plugs so they were trying to operate the opposite sides. :?

I've also noticed that i can't operate my windows unless the engine is running is this normal :? as all the other cars i've owned you just need the ignition on to operate them :!:
