Hello All,
Have a 1997 / 406 /1,998 Turbo / Petrol / Exec' / Estate and both Keys now have knackered key fob switches. It's the type with one large button (knackered) one small one...see attached image. (ohh looks like this forum board has used up it's attachment quota!!)
Anyway, its as described above and the problem is that the actual button on the small circuit board is broken so I need to get a a complete replacement or at least new circuit board with switch?
Inside the key there is a small rectangular block about 3mm square and 8mm long which I guess is a transponder that is picked up by the ignition system. It's not powered so must be on an RF system?
So any ideas gratefully recieved on the best way to get a working set of keys!!

Re: Remote Key problem
You are quite correct - the little block is indeed a passive RF transponder which communicates with the immobiliser in the ECU via a ring-shaped aerial around the ignition barrel. The same technology as the anti-theft stickers in shops, except smaller due to the much shorter operating range. The key electronics are for the RF remote central locking, and it's not possible to recode keys even with dealer tools.
You have three options:
1) Buy a new key from Peugeot - over £100 including coding
2) Take keys and ECU from an identical 406 in a breakers yard
3) Use a heat gun or small blowtorch (like a gas soldering iron) to switch the pcb buttons

Re: Remote Key problem
Thanks MJB,
So I can't get a new PCB because it's coded to the ECU?....I hoped I could and just switch the Transponder over at the same time.
Problem is that I can't switch the buttons as they are both knackered !!!....you don't happen to know what button it is ?...I actually work within the SMT microelectronics industry and could probably get hold of one if I knew what type / manufacturer it was.
Regards
Rod

Re: Remote Key problem
Hello again,
Just read a post somewhere that suggested removing big switch from the board and replace it with the the 'small' switch (not sure what it's for, never used it).
Does'nt sound lioke a bad idea, certainly better than paying £100 for a new switch, especially if I have never used the small switch on the fob before.
Anyone like to comment.

Re: Remote Key problem
Rodders, if you are even in the slightest handy with a soldering iron, you can get replacement switches as shown in this thread viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7124&p=82311&hilit= ... tch#p82311
Hope this helps
