406 Fire :-(, seeking answers

Hi there

I have just bought a (03) 406 Estate SE HDI (110), having had two of the same car's before (as Taxis). Now one of the drivers left a taxi for 10 minutes and when he came back it was smoking and we all know about somking it kills you in the end, soon she was on fire and then on a dreaded tow truck

Obviously this is a little scary as I have a son who falls asleep regularly in our new car and we have to take him out every time due to paranoia (which probably isn't a bad thing really)

soo I'd like to know if there is any common faults that cause this fire as the insurance company said this i quite a regular claim

also there is a vacuum pump in the engine bay it appears to be connected between the servo and Turbo pipe?, this stays on for about a minute after stopping the car

Not heard of anything similar, (but I'm no expert).
AFAIK the vacuum pump is engine driven off the end of the camshaft. Might you be hearing a slight vacuum leak?

This is (was) a common problem when the cars wiring went 'multiplex' and the fires were connected with a fault on the radiator cooling fan control modules.

I think most 2003 cars will have been fixed under the recall programme but some must slip through....

It's be worth checking with a peugeot main dealer - they have a computer system which lists every warrenty item carried out on your car just by giving them the reg No. I think if it shows yours has not been rectified then they'd still be very favourable towards you.

this vacuum pump looks like a windscreen washer motor, it's fed by 12v and is located directly behind the engine at the top of the bulkhead there are two of them but only one stays on when you put your hand on it it's vibrating

There was a spate of fires caused by water getting into the cooling fans but as far as I know they should have been repaired under a recall.

Edit: that's one of the vacuum solenoids controlling the EGR, turbo and something else the name of which temporarily escapes me as my car doesn't have it (will make a buzzing noise after the engine has stopped as the vacuum dissipates, press the brake pedal a few times and it'll stop) The 12 volts is just to turn it on and off.

Rite then, I've just been on to Peugeot assist hmmm..

there was a recall, my car doesn't come under the criteria for the recall, but having given them the reg for my old 406 they said that didn't fall into the criteria either , strangely both cars have had new radiators under warranty work.

So I have asked Peugeot assist to open a case . lets see where this one goes

Ah! sounds like one of the vacuum solenoids on the bulkhead, like these:

There's 3 x Solenoids on the last few HDi 110's......

EGR function
Turbo Wastegate function
Air Dozer function

The air dozer is for emissions but can't for the life of me remember how it works (it's like a traditional throttle butterfly).
