Ciggy lighter woes

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Ciggy lighter woes

Post by johnboy »

HI,

Ive just bought one of them universal cigarette lighters and hardwired it into the car, the normal push down bit that lights up works ok, but when i goto plug in my tomtom charger it starts to smoke or blows the fuse? any ideas?

I think my tomtom charger is now buggered as it was smoking for a fair while after i took it out :(

Check the voltage ratings of your universal lighter, Tom Tom and charger, and the current ratings of the above plus the fuse fitted on the lighter's circuit.

I took the wife's old laptop adaptor to charge my drill. After failing to check the rating, and plugging an 18V charger in to a 12V drill, I ended up with a burnt charger and melted battery >.<

If all your ratings are in order, consider that the universal lighter, your charger or indeed your car's wiring may be defective.

Well luckily i only plugged in the charger on its own without the tomtom to see if the light came on.

Ill see if i can see the ratings from the packaging on the universal lighter, i presumed it would be ok as the normal popout lighter works fine, its just anything else it dosent like lol.
