Air con electrics

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Hi Everyone,
Thank you all for taking the time to think about this problem. As it is still a mystery as to why the system came back to life, I will keep you all up to date with any further events.

Hi Everyone,
Well, that didnt last long, comp now gone back to sleep! While I wait for my pp2000 to arrive, and save up for the laptop to use it with, I am of a mind to try a replacement control panel. Problem is, my local used parts provider has five of these in stock but they are all slightly diff to mine in the positioning of the buttons, even though three were removed from "R" reg cars. Could anyone tell me if they will interchange? My panel has recirc and AC butttons on the top, with man fan and auto inc + - on the bottom.

Have you thought of having it re - gassed and checked for leaks at the same time ?
When i had shite loads of trouble with my a/c and it was leaking it worked intermitently
until all gas and fluid had escaped . Also on the compressor electo magnetic clutch mechanism
there is apparently a gap that has to be set with feeler gauges that over time if it gets wider
the clutch has problems engaging .
.. ooh are those drugs for me Matron

Hi,
System was checked and recharged. Clutch is ok, just no volts getting to it, or fan relays.

Hi Everyone,
The saga continues, I now have an air con system which works when it feels like it! Replacement control panel has improved things in as much as I can now increase fan speeds manualy without having to go to "Eco" mode first, touching fan speed button clears the auto command. Car and pp2000 are visiting local garage next week!

That's the way it's supposed to work - 'auto' only shows when it's in full auto mode, and setting a fixed fan speed overrides that.

Hi everyone,
pp2000 arrived and given to manager of local garage ( he has lap top, and knowlage re how to use it!) All loaded ok but when tried on a known fault free car, would only tell him the chassis number! Meanwhile my air con continues to live a life free of any restriction in the form of commands from myself! When(if!) pp2000 is proved, car will join it, and I may find out whats wrong.

Hi everyone.
PP2000 tested and proved to be ok( problem was lap top for some reason) car given a "global" test and no faults found with the air con!It is possable to engage the comp via the PP2000 and it drives ok, system then cooling car as reqd! Apart from leaving the PP2000 conected and placing lap top on wifes lap so she can operate the system, has anyone any ideas as to the root cause of this problem? I am going to fit a new press switch, more in hope than expectation, it must be said. To save people the chore of looking up all my posts, here is a quick resume of the problem.
Car is `98 1.9 td est fitted with climate control a/c , which tries to do its job, but the comp is not being energised, no volts at comp plug. Running comp direct from battery proved system to be ok,and comp also functioned for several days after, without the direct feed, but has since failed again after a short period of working when it felt like it . During this period, the comp was more likely to operate on cooler days!

Try checking the status of the AC pressure, and climate control sensors with the PP2000 when it's not working... you might find something's giving bad values which would cause it to not run (like if it thinks the internal temperature is -16.7 million degrees C  )

Hi MJB,
Thanks for your reply. Air con was not working during the 2000 test. Int temp was recorded at 32 so unless its gone english(deg F!) that should be close to correct. We are going to recheck gas as when comp is energised with direct feed, cooled air still seems to be too warm, though def cooler than ambient. However, this will have to wait as the recon head fitted three months ago has failed and there is coolant in the cyls again! I have a low milage engine to go in, hope this will be the end of my problems, or the 406 may end up as spares for my old xantia, which is still on the farm, under the hedge!
